“We continue to channel our thoughts and prayers in the ongoing search and rescue operation for Dennis and the pilot, Ron Johnston,” the Forgeron family said in a statement.
Hours later, on Saturday afternoon, Lt. Edward Stansfield, with the Halifax-based Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre, said its 42-hour search in the hopes of finding the men alive had ended.
The search, now a recovery effort, was handed over the RCMP.
Members of the Calgary Flying Club were hurting upon learning two staples of the organization were feared dead.

The twin-engine craft took off from Markham, Ont.

The plane disappeared from an air traffic controller’s screen during poor weather later that night as it neared Sydney.
The crash site is about 14 kilometres out to sea.
Johnston is the chief executive officer of Expander Energy Inc. of Calgary.
CBC radio interviewed a person who said the plane was coming in for a landing at Nova Scotia, then overshot the runway and somewhat erratically flew off over the ocean and crashed in the brink 14 km later with no radio transmission.
